What has sustained us in tough and challenging times over our 38 year marriage plus the time we spent together before we were married has primarily been two things: the willingness to take personal responsibility as you mention, and an alignment in our spiritual values and commitment. As I examine the context of my life, I notice that taking responsibility for my experience of the quality of aliveness in relationship overlaps with my spiritual approach to life in general. Somehow blaming my wife or holding anyone else accountable for my experience of events, positive or negative, also seems to be one of the cornerstones of a spiritual approach to life.
